Now that I write professionally, I understand that Stephenie Meyers already had the story mapped out and it could only come from her thoughts, so my story, while similar only in that I made sure I kept true to facts from the other books, is my own creation. Tonight, I pulled it out and indulged in some of the scenes. Of course I'm biased, but I love my fourth book, not just for the story, but because it inspired me to make this a career.
Full of grammatical errors and overuse of italics (my editor bangs her head on her desk when she gets my drafts -- I love italics), I winced here and there, but mostly, I couldn't believe I really wrote it. So on the eve of the premiere showing of Breaking Dawn II which I'll be attending tomorrow night, I decided to share one of my favorite scenes -- one I liked better than the original book. Yes, I know there were reasons (I think?) for the way Edward turned Bella into a vampire, but I felt it lacked the "romance" of such an important event. So, here's my version. Again, my story, but the characters are not, so I can never do anything beyond sharing a glimpse. Enjoy...
Scene set up: Centers on the promise Edward made in Italy to the Volturri to change Bella within a prescribed time frame. Trying to not break the treaty with the Quileute tribe, Edward and Bella decide to wait until they were in Alaska (taken from Eclipse where Bella and Edward announced to Charlie they would be going to Alaska to attend school together - something that was never brought into Book 4) before changing her. The Volturri, however, had scouts watching the Cullens and after Bella and Edward had been married a few months and she remained human, word was sent back to the Volturri that Edward failed to make good on his promise. Alice warned the family that the Volturri were making preparations to head to Forks the next day, leaving Edward no choice but to change Bella, or risk Caius making good on his threat to change or kill her himself.
We were finally alone. My heart pounded hard in my chest. This was "goodbye" ... to me and my human existence. Edward put Debussy on and held his arms out to me.
"Dance with me, Bella."
We barely moved, just rocked gently back and forth. Tears came without warning. Edward embraced me, letting me sob while he stroked my hair, graced my head with tiny kisses, all in an effort to soothe me. He let me fall apart while he gathered up the pieces as I let every last human emotion escape through my tears. Life as I knew it was coming to a final end. I was both apprehensive and excited about the new one about to unfold.
We were at the place we only talked about, usually at my insistence, about to follow through with the one thing I wanted so badly -- something I'd fantasized over for so long, yet here, now, in this room with Edward, knowing there would be no turning back...I was terrified.
"Bella? Babe, you're shaking."
Edward brushed my hair away from my face, lifting my chin with his finger to where he could see my eyes. His thumbs brushed the last lingering tears from my cheeks. His eyes were warm gold, but the look they held was that of pain. I could see the anguish in his face -- torn with having to do this, not because he didn't want to, but because he did...and now he sensed my fear.
I was suddenly aware Edward held his breath. He looked away and pulled my head to his chest, his embrace tightening. His jaws snapped, but his arms held me so tenderly that it confused me. Clarity hit me hard when I realized what was happening and I became truly afraid. He'd turned into a predator and his kill lay before him, filled with fear of the inevitable. He could sense it...smell it. I knew he fought the monster within and felt caught between Edward the vampire -- the one who constantly thirsted for my blood, and Edward my husband -- the one who thirsted for my love -- and me...in the middle.
Edward didn't change the way he held me and I could feel his cool breath blow softly through the hair on top of my head as he whispered. "Bella, tell me what your thinking...feeling. I can feel your heart beating so fast and your body is tense. If you've changed your mind, I understand. I cant -- won't do this if your are not truly ready. I have to know the truth because this will change everything -- everything you are and were...forever. There will be no turning back once I bite." He pushed me to arm's length, locking me in an intense gaze. "We'll find another way around the Volturri, I swear."
"You can't make that promise, Edward. I was there, remember? I know these monsters and I'll never forget how betrayed Caius looked. He won't be defeated again and you know it. My time is up, one way or the other -- either by him, or you. You're right. There's no turning back."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down until our foreheads touched. He slipped his arms around my waist, locking his wrists behind me. I continued in a low whisper, gently twisting the hair at the back of his neck. "I haven't changed my mind about this or being with you -- like you. Remember our vows? I love you hopelessly and without end. You are my life -- my past, my present, and my future. Where you go, I go. Where you are, I am there too. Always and forever yours."
Edward drew me tightly against him, one arm still embracing me about the waist, the other braided in my hair, gently tugging my head back. His topaz eyes burned with such intensity as he bent and softly pressed his lips to my waiting mouth. He kissed me again harder, his tongue tracing the hollow on the roof of my mouth, allowing me to breathe him in without any caution. Carefully, I edged my tongue past his razor sharp teeth, relishing the forbidden allowance and caressing the inside of his mouth, my breathing completely out of control. He tasted different -- unlike anything I'd experienced before, so sweet and intoxicating. I wanted more. I wanted him. Blood surged like liquid heat in my veins, filling every pore in my body to the point of pain.
He lifted me in his arms not releasing me from our sensuous lip lock. I felt myself moving, but I didn't want to open my eyes -- break the spell. Edward delicately laid me on the bed, pulling away long enough to search my eyes, his gaze immersed in passion...mine with desire. His icy breath covered my skin like cool satin, creating a tingling sensation I'd never felt. His scent was so intense, hypnotic, and inviting. He pressed the length of his body over mine, his hands exploring, tenderly caressing. His mouth languished my neck, sliding over my throat.
I shivered when he kissed my earlobe and whispered ever so quietly. "I'll never give you up. I love you hopelessly and without end. You are my life -- my past, my present, my future. Where you go, I go. Where you are, I am there too. Always and forever yours."
Then he bit me.
